July - "Ocean Milling"

Chris DeStephano has been one of the many able to take advantage of the millions of trees that were brought down in Hurricanes Katrina and Rita last year.

The above oak is a large live oak that was washed up in a 32 foot tidal surge on the Gulf Coast in Waveland, Mississippi. It was stopped only when the limbs hit what was left of the beach house foundations.

Lucky for Chris, he had some helpers to move the log down to the beach where he could spend a beautiful couple of days working the mill, or watch his fianceé, Cathy (pictured above), cutting off some slabs for him.

From this beauty they got some 1" boards, a 2½" slab for a bar top, a few 3" slabs, and some 4" thick slabs with the natural edge of the tree.

For more information on Chris' operation, check out hisMiller Profile.

If you've been milling something or somewhere interesting, let us know. Send your photo through to Emma.
